Knocking sense the viral way-1

As we sit in our rooms checking the total number of cases on worldometers or busy making a recipe that was popularized on social media we need to ask ourselves some important questions.
Chaos may be a pit or a ladder but it definitely compels us to ponder.
Yes, it required a virus to knock sense into our modern minds.

1.How is the strength of the country measured?
What drives the economy of a nation?

As all my budding investors would have realized, in the past 2 months ,approximately 30% of
their invested wealth would have been eroded. Is it because we are on a war? Or is it because we are not producing food? Is it because Chandrayaan-2 failed? Or is it because we are not making good films or paying the actors enough? Or is it because the cricketers have lost yet another world cup in the last year?

The answer to all these questions is as we all know is just the circulation of a virus for which a vaccine has not been developed yet. Now just imagine living in a world where there was no vaccine, no known cure for all the deadly diseases, no doctors, no nurses.

Is India justified in spending just 2% of GDP on healthcare when U.S.A spends about 18.5% of GDP on healthcare?
We have arguably controlled the number of cases but it is more because the lockdown has been timely imposed and doctors are readily working without the necessary facilities.

2. Who are indeed the heroes of our society?

" Aaj doctors, nurses, police hai  sabse zyaada kaam ke,
Aur mujh jaise bollywood actors toh hai bas naam ke"
These are the exact words of the actor who has been the most critically appreciated over the past few years for his work both on screen and off screen through his thought provoking messages.

So next time just pause and reflect for 5 minutes when someone asks you which profession do you look up to.

3. What are we giving to the heroes in return?

Yes, there was a 5 minute applause organised for all those who are working in these turbulent times so that people can see a brighter future, or atleast a future, but is that enough?

Everyday we hear few incidents where the patients relatives or an unknown, unidentified mob has beaten up a doctor. Even if a 85 year old man with history of unregulated, uncontrolled smoking and alcohol abuse of years with 4 existing co-morbidities dies or whether it is the medical staff trying to identify the positive patients to protect the society at large.

Every now and then, we see a newspaper trying to defame a doctor when the patient does not get the desired result without bothering to dive into the reality or proper facts of the case without realizing that this adds up to the agony of the people against the doctors.

Ever cared to think what sacrifices the medical worker has made to reach the stage where he/she is at present.

4. What goes into the making of a medical worker?

For those wanting to enter a doctorate course:
12 years of being at the top of your academics at the school without being overly distracted.

For getting that M.B.B.S degree
4 and a half years of running through 21 never ending subjects and giving an exam every month.
1 year of internship where you have to balance between doing clinical work and competing with one lakh best students across the country and secure a top 1000 finish so that you get to chose your branch and college.

For getting the speciality degree:
3 years of doing 48 hour non stop shifts across two emergencies and dealing with unending patient load and an exam to follow where you are expected to know everything.

For getting the super speciality degree:
Yet another entrance exam or an interview. Atleast 3 more years of labour, if not more if you are lucky to get admission without bonds.

5. What needs to be done?

Doctors do not necessarily need the applause on a nation wide basis every now and then but next time when you visit your doctor, be it at a government or a private hospital, just respect them because it matters.

We do not want to reach a stage where bright students stop pursuing medicine because of the pains involved and the toll it takes on their personal, emotional , mental and now a days physical well being.

If we dream of becoming a superpower, healthcare must be given the top priority without a hint of doubt because as our honourable prime minister said

"JAAN HAI TO JAHAAN HAI"
